The Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Gallup consistently receives mixed reviews, with significant issues regarding elevator maintenance and luggage handling impacting guest experiences. While staff are generally friendly and the breakfast is considered adequate, persistent problems with infrastructure and guest comfort are a recurring concern. Recent feedback suggests an overall decline in service and maintenance standards.
We were absolutely exhausted when we finally checked into this hotel at midnight after being stranded on the side of the highway with a flat tire for TEN hours. All we wanted was to get checked in, get settled, and get some sleep. Instead, we arrived to find the elevator completely broken and inoperable. What’s frustrating is that nobody from the hotel bothered to communicate this ahead of time to guests with reservations. A simple phone call or message would have been the right thing to do — especially for travelers arriving late at night after a long, exhausting day. I’m on the road over 10 months out of the year traveling coast to coast, and my luggage isn’t light. I had two suitcases weighing at least 60 pounds each PLUS another large bag. I literally had to carry everything up the stairs myself. My back is killing me, and honestly they’re lucky I didn’t fall carrying all of that up and down those staircases. To top it off? They offered 5,000 Marriott points as if that somehow made this situation acceptable. Come on Marriott. Come on Fairfield. Do better. Communication matters. Guest safety matters. Basic consideration matters. Instead of hoping guests would just be “okay” climbing multiple flights of stairs with heavy luggage late at night, maybe prioritize people over profit for once.
Staff was very friendly. The only issue was the elevator was out of service and we were on the fourth floor. Front desk staff was willing to change our room but we declined since we were given an early checkin accommodation. The fourth floor room was the only one available for early checkin so we went with it. We did get our steps in during our stay lol. The hotel is clean and nice and I would say kid friendly.
If you're planning on staying at the Fairfield by Marriott Gallup - just don't. This hotel is a shame to the Marriott brand and should not be operating. The elevator was not working when we arrived and we were not informed about it prior to arrival. Reading the reviews here I now can see that it's been broken for quite some time. I was first given a room on the second floor (203) that had a very strong and disgusting smell of mold. Upon complaining about the smell I was moved to another room on the fourth floor (410). The key cards that the clerk gave us for the fourth floor room didn't work so we had to go back to the front desk to have the key card programmed again. The AC was not working when we finally got into the room so the front desk clerk had to reset it to make it work. The room was quite disgusting with stains of mold in the bathroom grout and pet hairs in the carpet. But it was already fairly late at night and we were quite exhausted from all the stair climbing that we decided to just stay. This hotel should be shut down by the health department. Wouldn't be allowed to stay in business in any other location. Extremely bad, I can't trust the Marriott brand anymore for a comfortable stay.
This hotel has been mismanaged so badly that I now have it on my do not stay list. The elevator has now been out over a week. Last week I was put on 2nd floor or given chance to cancel after arriving. Nobody reached out before I arrived to notify me that the elevator was out of service. After arriving I requested 1st floor but said I could handle one flight of stairs if I must as I have a very weak spine. I got put on 2nd floor. Today one week later I call hotel to ask prior to booking a room if there would be any available rooms tonight on the 1st or 2nd floor and was told that it was she was not allowed to answer that until after I make a reservation. Excuse me? The breakfast sucks. The cleanliness of the hotel has gone down considerably in the past year. Why would you make it difficult to stay on your property when you have done nothing to make it a Marriott quality property. It was a simple question that could have easily been answered. Instead of making a reservation I might need to cancel I will just move to a different hotel in Gallup moving forward.
Our overall stay at the hotel was very pleasant. The rooms were clean, and breakfast offered a good variety of options. Several issues significantly impacted our stay: The coffee was only lukewarm both in the evening and during breakfast. Additionally, the elevator and pool were under maintenance for the entire duration of our visit. This made carrying luggage and personal belongings to our room difficult and exhausting, and it eliminated the ability to use the pool altogether. The designated dog area also needs attention. There were exposed wires coming out of the ground, a visible gas line in the same area, and no grassy surface creating an unsafe and poorly maintained space for pets. This poses a serious safety risk and shows a lack of proper maintenance.
Showed up to be told the elevator was out of service, and that they were putting me on the second floor. The staff was absolutely fantastic and offered to take my bags up. I am recovering from rotator cuff surgery, so I took her up on the offer, but felt horrible because she doesn't need to be lugging everyone's luggage up the stairs. She was the only one working, and right after I checked in, an older couple walked in, and the male, who had just had knee surgery, was using a cane and was going to have to walk up multiple flights of stairs. I became even more agitated after reading reviews and seeing that the elevator had been broken for a while and that they never notified those who made reservations in advance, so we could find an alternative hotel. I get to my room, and i am immediately met with the smell of cat pee, and there is black long black hairs on my pillows. I have red hair. I was so tired from my long drive and honestly felt so bad for the one person working, so I just decided to make do. The breakfast was nice, and the staff were great, but honestly, the elevator situation is ridiculous. Especially since it's been down for a while, according to reviews, there was plenty of time to notify those with reservations, and the animal urine smell was just nasty. I will be traveling to Gallup a lot for work moving forward, and I'm not sure if I will stay again.
Clean and neat. The staff was friendly. Sad to say that this hotel has had better days. The elevator was out of order and we have and we had my in-laws in their 70s with us. Not great. Granted this could happen to any hotel at any point but there were other issues with maintenance and things out of order. But what can I expect from a place in the middle of the desert.
The last night of my trip the elevator was closed for cleaning. At least that is what the hand written note said. I was staying on the top floor and due to a breathing issue stairs are extremely hard for me. They put chairs on all the landings for me to rest on the way up. Someone who introduced herself as the general manager but never gave a name talked to me last night and assured me that someone would help carry my luggage down this morning. However, every time I called the front desk no one answered.
I've been traveling all over the country and of course staying at various hotels. There seems to be a formula for a 3 star hotel, good room, nice included breakfast, pool, exercise room, laundry, working TV, clean, etc. It's the service that distinguishes one brand from the other or even within the same brand. The staff here make the difference. From making the reservation to check-in they were just the nicest people. The room checked all the boxes so count on a good stay. It was when I was getting my luggage into the room where my hands were full and the cart had gone bit sideways that one of the housekeepers hurried down the hall just to help hold the door so I could get into the room easier that showed real concern and attention for their customers. This hotel was spotless! The eating area for the included breakfast was spotless and someone made sure all the food was hot or cold as it should be. The bathroom was good sized and also spotless, someone knows how to manage a hotel. Kudos to the afternoon desk staff and May who was there at check out. If you want to stay where clean, friendly and well appointed means something, consider this Fairmont at the top of your list. I'd stay here again and will if I'm in Gallup. The staff are 5 star and the room was top tier.
Nice place. Staff was nice and professional. My Room was clean 2 Minor issues Wifi/Internet was very slow. Train Tracks across the street they are quite busy. If you are bothered by train noise may not be the best choice. Editing to say. Train Noise I realize this Hotel is close to the Rail Line. But this is for others that may not know and are possibly light sleepers...(The way the rail line runs through town I'm guessing it's the same at every other Hotel/Motel in Gallup.) As for the Wifi it was slow for me last night. Maybe a lot of others were streaming, I can't speak to that I was just trying to do some light work on my laptop. Also I can say my Phone was also quite slow using mobile data so maybe Gallup just has slow internet in general. I have Gig Fiber at home.
